Picture Retake Day: Tuesday, October 30, 2012 is picture retake day.

Halloween: On Wednesday we are inviting the preschoolers to come dressed as their favorite character from a book for our literacy party from 8:45-11:20. This we will be preschool for the day. We are also encouraging parents to come and help us out. The day will be lots of fun. We will be doing many different literacy activities with all the preschool classes and the kindergarten classes.

Knuffle Bunny Field Trip: The permission slip for the Knuffle Bunny Play will be coming out shortly. We will need the money and permission slips back as soon as possible so that we can ensure the correct number of tickets.

Parent-Teacher conferences: Conferences will be held on Tuesday, November 13, 2012. There is a sign up sheet located by the door. Please sign up for a time to discuss your child’s process. In addition to the conferences, we are asking that if you have time (before or after your conference appointment) you come and help us prepare for the preschool fundraiser that will be held the following Thursday. Please see that sign up by the door as well.

Preschool fundraiser: The preschool fundraiser will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2012 from 5:30-7:00. It should be a great night. There will be a silent auction, dinner for sale and your child’s art work for sale. This is a great opportunity to meet other preschool parents and load up on holiday gifts. If you have any items you would like to donate to the silent auction please contact Lindsay Banman via email (lindsayjbanman@gmail.com) or phone (773-612-0077). Thank you in advance! We will also need donations of store bought desserts and drinks for the night of the event as well. If you would like to make these donations please see Ms. Graham.

Artwork Framing: The frames are available to start framing the preschooler’s artwork. If you have some time to spare well your child is in class please let us know. We would love some help framing the artwork, since this is the most labor intensive part of the fundraiser it would be great if you could lend us some man or woman power.

Thank You: Thank you to all the parents that braved the cold to join us on our first field trip. We could not go on filed trips without your assistance. Thank you so much for everything you do everyday!

Dear Parents:

 
We are all excited about our first field trip! Please get your slips in! We are going to Eden’s Place, a pumpkin patch, on Friday, October 26th. The donation for the field trip will be $10 a child. Parents attending the trip must pay $7. Both classes need to be at school at 8:45. We will be returning at 11:45. Please dress for the weather, we will be outside the entire time.

 
We are still studying families and have also delved into the “Autumn Exploration” We will continue to study our pumpkins and gourds and we will begin studying the beautiful Fall leaves.

 
Please remember that the Lending Library is an opportunity for your child to choose (and re-choose) books that they are interested in. Please accept your child’s choices. There are very few real choices that preschool children have and this is one choice where they do have complete control over. Please honor their choices. Please refer to the Lending Library procedures for more explanation of why it is important for children to re-read stories over and over.

 

Celebration Time!

We will be having a Pre-K and Kindergarten Literacy celebration on Wednesday, October 31st. The children are encouraged to dress up in their favorite “literary character. It is acceptable to dress up as characters that are loosely related to literacy. Super Heroes and Princess’ are characters in many books and comics! The only rule is that the children may NOT wear masks of any kind. Many children are frightened by masks and the event is intended to be a fun experience, not a scary one. We are asking that the children come to school dressed in their costumes. We are asking for parents to assist us with the set up, during the event, and for a speedy clean up at the close of the event. Please let us know if you are available to assist us. We are also asking parents who wish to send celebration treats to please send a healthier option. Stickers, pencils, spider rings, or low fat and low sugar items are all great alternatives to candy. We will have fun healthy snack the day of the event. If you are willing donate a bag of pretzel sticks (small for spider legs), raisins, cream cheese, small paper plates, ritz crackers (preferably whole wheat) , or napkins please let us know.

Dear Parents:

We want to thank all of the parents who have brought in unique looking gourds!  Our collection is steadily growing!  We would also like to thank Jennie (Nicholas’ mom) for loaning us books in her native language.  We would welcome more books as well! 

The children are getting quite excited about our upcoming field trip to the Pumpkin Patch.  Please check your child’s mailboxes for more information.  I have included the following procedures for the parents who are planning on attending the field trip.  Please feel free to ask me any questions!  Thanks!

 Field Trip Procedures

 Parent participation is essential in ensuring that our preschool
children have appropriate field trip experiences. We highly appreciate parents who are able to assist us on our outings! We want to thank all of the parents who will be assisting us on our trips in advance!

 On field trips we ask that parents supervise their child along with a small group of other children. We ask that you follow all safety rules and abide by the set schedule especially for meal and departure times.  We also ask that parents DO NOT take part in any extra activities that are not included in the pre-planned field trip (i.e. going to any
show/exhibit/performance that is an extra cost, or purchase treats or toys at souvenir shops). We have children with food allergies and it could be potentially dangerous to partake in treats/food made with unknown ingredients.

On lengthier field trips (No Lunch needed on the first 2 field trips) we ask that parents pack a COMPLETELY disposable lunch for their child. It is too difficult to try to keep track of lunch sacks, Tupperware, etc., when on a field trip with 40+ preschoolers. Please be sure to write your child’s name CLEARLY on all sack/bag lunches. Please do not send items that need to be heated, there is not always a microwave available for reheating food. Please plan on this same procedure for all future field trips, unless we have provided other instructions.

 Preschool Fundraiser

 It is time to start planning our Preschool Fundraiser.  This year the preschool fundraiser will be held on Thursday, November 15th.  Not much time to get this all together, so I really need your help!  Last year we raised $3500. We are hoping to raise $4000 this year to help us pay for music class for our preschoolers and any needed materials that we might need throughout the year.  We will need help soliciting business for donations for our silent auction, help the night of the event, help with publicity for the event and finally preparing the artwork for our art sale.

If you are still interested in assisting us with this amazing event please plan to attend one these informational / planning meetings in room 411.

We are welcoming in the lovely Autumn weather! Please be sure to swap out your child’s extra summer clothes with WARM clothes. Please be sure to send a jacket or sweater with your child. In addition to our daily gross motor activities on our playground, we will go on nature walks in the neighborhood to explore the Autumn changes that are occurring.

We will be continuing our study of families as well as exploring pumpkins and gourds. If you see any unique looking gourds and would like to donate them to our classroom we would appreciate it! We are also starting to work on our very first individual “books.” Everyone’s first book will be “All About Me” and we will send home pages for your child’s book to be filled out at home with your family. Please be sure to complete the pages with your child and send them back to school.

We will also be making a class book that will have everyone’s “Name Letter” in them as well, so if you have not sent in your child’s letter, there is still time to do so, it would be extra special to have a letter for each child included in our class book! Please be sure to check your child’s mailbox daily. Please be sure to fill out the lunch form – although our students do not eat the school supplied breakfast or lunch the school will generate funds for each form that is completed…please fill it out and turn it in…every penny counts! Thanks.

Mark your calendars!

Our first field trip is scheduled for October 26th to Eden’s Place Nature Center. This is a “pumpkin” patch located right here in the city, please check out the website at www.edenplacenaturecenter.com. Our second field trip is scheduled for November 28th to see the play the Knuffle Bunny at Emerald City. Both the morning and the afternoon students will attend school starting at 8:45 until the field trip is over. More information will be in next week’s update. If you would like to volunteer for field trips, special occasions, and in the classroom, please be sure to fill out the Volunteer Pack. You can pick up a pack in the main office.

Please be sure to check out the updated school calendar. There are several changes that have been made, which includes half day attendance days for the students. The first half day attendance will be Wednesday, October 10th. The morning session of pre-k will have the regular class. The afternoon class will not have class on Wednesday.
